The UNC School of Medicine Academy of Educators (AOE) is soliciting nominations for this year’s Teaching Awards. Submit a nomination for an outstanding faculty member by Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at 11:59 PM. Nominees do not have to be members of the Academy.

Last week, the Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development and the Association of Professional Women in Medical Sciences (APWIMS) hosted a panel focused on the Daily Career and Life Transitions of women faculty. Over 80 women from the School of Medicine and the Adams School of Dentistry participated in the event.

The Department of Allied Health Sciences (DAHS) has named John Grose as its associate chair for research and scholarship, which leads research across seven disciplines and several units in the health care spectrum. Grose, a professor in both the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) and in the DAHS Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, began this role January 1, 2020.

The UNC School of Medicine Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development and the Center for Health Innovation are accepting proposals for the 2020 UNC School of Medicine Well-Being Pilot Awards. Applications are due Jan. 14, 2020, and as many as three awards of up to $10,000 each will be announced in March 2020.

Rabia Nizamani, MD, an assistant professor of surgery in the division of burn surgery at UNC-Chapel Hill, discusses why she chose to become a burn surgeon, her love of teaching, and why UNC is one of the best places to learn.

Don Nakayama, MD, is a pediatric surgeon and professor of surgery at UNC Surgery in Chapel Hill. In this video, he talks about why he chose to become a pediatric surgeon and how he establishes trust with parents.

UNC School of Medicine faculty and staff are invited to upcoming town hall meetings to discuss university library journal subscriptions and costs of published research. Multiple sessions will be held in the coming weeks.

Making the Case is a highly interactive program designed to help faculty transform an idea into a compelling proposal. Over the course of three sessions, participants will develop or refine their idea, identify key stakeholders, receive coaching from leaders across the institution, and practice pitching their idea in a low-stakes environment.

The sessions are open to all UNC affiliated staff, students, researchers, clinical trainees and faculty. Please drop in to experience some basic, guided mindfulness practices that incorporate insight-oriented, gratitude, and loving-kindness meditations, among other practices.
