The set of guidelines in place to help navigate academic promotion for the School of Medicine’s (SoM) full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty were recently revamped. The last major revisions were made to the guidelines in 2012, and the revised guidelines will go into effect on July 1, 2021.

In the fall of 2020, the Faculty Affairs and Diversity Leadership Committee (FADLC), which reports to the Academic Council (AC), formed a task force to review and propose revisions to the School of Medicine’s guidelines for appointments, promotion, and tenure. The task force was comprised of 16 faculty and staff (listed below) who were directly responsible for developing themes and recommended revisions to the Dean’s Advisory Committee (DAC) and AC for amendment. The task force hosted a variety of town halls and meetings to solicit feedback from the SoM community and incorporated that feedback into the revisions.

Major enhancements included in the revised APT criteria consist of the creation of variable track, ‘Meet the Mark’ criteria for promotion and tenure, and the purposeful involvement of faculty promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Faculty DEI contributions may extend across research, teaching, or service and will be documented in the faculty’s Curriculum Vitae and at the time of proposed promotion in the new DEI Statement and the Department Chair’s letter. Meet the mark criteria replaced time-based promotion requirements as the basis for promotion and tenure. The variable track is to be used in limited circumstances for initial appointment of junior faculty.

In December 2020, the revised guidelines were approved by the DAC, and the AC. This project is the first major accomplishment for the Faculty Affairs and Diversity Leadership Committee. The new guidelines are available on the Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development website.

The Offices of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development and Human Resources are working on educational materials to communicate the revisions. In addition, Drs. Kim Boggess, senior associate dean for Faculty Affairs and Cam Enarson, vice dean for Strategic Initiatives, began presenting the revisions to departments and other groups in January.
