The University of North Carolina Board of Governors announced today that UNC Health Care CEO and Dean of the UNC School of Medicine Dr. William L. Roper has been named interim president of the UNC System, effective January 1, 2019. Dr. Roper also serves as vice-chancellor for Medical Affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

At an awards dinner in New York City, Joseph Piven was named co-recipient of the Ruane Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Research by the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation.

Etteinne “ET” and W. G. Champion “Champ” Mitchell of New Bern, North Carolina, will create a new fund supporting ground-breaking research in blood cancer at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, including lymphoma, leukemia and myeloma research, in gratitude for the care Champ received and to bolster research directed at finding cures.

Impacts of environmental toxins may be missed when researchers fail to compare effects on men and women, according to a study by UNC-Chapel Hill scientists. UNC School of Medicine’s Ilona Jaspers, PhD, led the research.

Julie Byerley, MD, MPH, has been named Executive Vice Dean of the UNC School of Medicine, effective November 1. Byerley will continue her present role while also assuming expanded leadership responsibilities for the School of Medicine.

At the 35th Annual National Oncology Conference, the Association of Community Cancer Centers recognized the NC Cancer Hospital for early adoption of a program to reduce drug waste and reduce drug cost.

2-Step Verification will soon be required to access Office 365, which includes email, calendar and OneDrive, among many other applications. School of Medicine faculty and staff will be required to use 2-Step in early November. The mandatory 2-Step for Office 365 will be a phased rollout from November 1st - 8th. In preparation for this, several dedicated 2-Step Help Clinics will be available throughout the School of Medicine.

On November 12, 2018, UNC School of Medicine IT will launch the new Webex video conferencing service for School of Medicine faculty, staff, and students.

Jackson Roush, PhD, and Cara McComish, PhD, both faculty within the Department of Allied Health Science's Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, have received two federally funded training grants totaling $1.3 million. The four-year grants will prepare future audiologists and speech-language pathologists to work with children who have autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities, in addition to hearing loss.
