Dear Colleagues,

Wesley Burks, MD

On Monday we will observe Martin Luther King Jr Day. The King Center has chosen “It Starts with Me” as the theme of this year’s observance. This theme should be familiar to you all as one of our system values, but in the context of Dr. King’s life and mission, It Starts with Me takes on a deeper significance.

“It Starts With Me” means that we meet the challenges placed before us and overcome them with empathy and grace. ”It Starts With Me” is directive to each of us to confront the needs of the moment and to rise to the occasion. “It Starts With Me” asks each of us take responsibility for creating a community in which everyone is treated with care.

In one of his sermons, Dr. King preached “All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” I hope each of you can see your work reflected in this quote.

All of us have a vital role to play in the health and well-being of our state. And every one of us can up lift our fellow North Carolinians by cultivating a culture of respect, equity and inclusion.

This culture starts with each one of us. It starts with ensuring equitable opportunities for our students and teammates. It starts with programs that improve access to top-level medical care and novel clinical studies in traditionally underserved rural and urban communities. It starts with all of you who take on your day-to-day duties with painstaking excellence.

Thank you for all you do each day to serve our patients and each other. I am honored to be a part of this One Great Team.

Sincerely,

Wesley
