The School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an accomplished and energetic leader to serve as chair and associate dean for the Department of Health Sciences. The selected individual will lead a diverse group of faculty, trainees and staff members and will oversee all aspects of the department, including clinical practice, education, research and fiscal management consistent with the strategic planning of the UNC School of Medicine, UNC Hospitals and UNC Health.
The Department of Health Sciences has robust education, research and clinical programs and annually enrolls more than 460 students in its certificate, undergraduate, masters, professional doctorate, PhD and residency programs. The chair and associate dean of health sciences is responsible for the overall management, budget, personnel, resource allocation and academic planning for the department.
The chair and associate dean will provide vision, leadership and direction in the clinical, research, education and service missions of the department across its seven divisions including Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling, Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Physical Therapy, Radiologic Science, Speech and Hearing Sciences. An eighth division, Neurodiagnostic Sleep Science, is planned for the fall of 2024. The department is home to 14 academic programs, six clinical practice locations, and various centers and programs, including the nationally known Center for Literacy and Disability Studies. Four of the department’s academic programs are in the top ten U.S. News and World Report Rankings.
The UNC School of Medicine is ranked 5th nationally in NIH funding among public universities. Research in the Department of Health Sciences can be categorized into the four primary areas: 1) children, families and development; 2) community health, education and wellness; 3) aging, rehabilitation and participation; and 4) research tools, technology and methodology. In 2022, the Department of Health Sciences received $6.5 million in awards and was featured in 86 publications across its range of disciplines.
Minimum qualifications include a doctoral degree, eligibility for a North Carolina license when needed, ability to obtain clinical privileges at UNC Hospitals/UNC Health, and a firm understanding of the various health professions.
Preferred qualifications include a distinguished record of research accomplishment, a strong commitment to clinical excellence, extensive experience in education and training healthcare professionals from all backgrounds, and clear demonstration of the qualities needed to lead and manage a multifaceted academic department into the future.
