Sebastian Gonzalez and his family traveled from Costa Rica to North Carolina for one reason: to be treated by Andrea Hayes-Jordan, MD. Hayes-Jordan serves as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the UNC School of Medicine, and Surgeon in Chief at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. She's also one of the few physicians in the world to specialize in the treatment of Desmoplastic small round cell tumor, Sebastian’s rare form of cancer.

UNC School of Medicine researchers, led by Brian Strahl, PhD, found surprising role for a protein called Spt6, which is crucial to the maintenance of proper messenger RNA levels in cells, a discovery that opens new research avenues and suggests a target for basic understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases.

On June 13, the UNC Employee Forum celebrated the contributions of employees from across campus. Two UNC School of Medicine employees, Shaketha Edwards and Erin Edwards were honored. In addition, ten UNC School of Medicine employees were elected delegates to the Employee Forum.

This past weekend, the UNC School of Medicine lost one of its great leaders, Stuart Bondurant, MD, who passed away at the age of 88. He served as dean for 15 years and interim dean for two more years.

On Saturday, May 12, the UNC School of Medicine held its commencement ceremony honoring the Class of 2018. Students gathered with faculty, friends, and family in Memorial Hall to celebrate their accomplishments. The class selected Alice Ma, MD, as its commencement speaker.

In a continued effort to prepare UNC medical students to provide comprehensive and compassionate care to the people of North Carolina and beyond, the School of Medicine has established a new sexual and gender minority (SGM) health curriculum. Emily Vander Schaaf, MD, MPH, assistant professor in the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, will lead the initiative.
