Matthew Nielsen, MD, MS, chair of urology and member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, was selected by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) to participate in the 2024 class of the NAM Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence program.

Guochun Jiang, PhD, assistant professor of biochemistry and biophysics and member of the UNC HIV Cure Center, received an R01 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health for his project “Defining the HIV reservoir and latency mechanism in human brain myeloid cells” which is funded for five years and $4.6 million.

The University Libraries has a new website: https://library.unc.edu/health-sciences/ Because the new site is designed to be more intuitive for first-time users, some resources and service requests on the Health Sciences Library's web site might be in different places. Existing website links are now redirecting to the appropriate page on the new site.

Brooke Matson, Jeremy Meier, Brittany Raffa, and Shivani Sud will receive support from the UNC School of Medicine Physician Scientists Training Program to cultivate their careers as translational clinical scientists.

The UNC Autism Research Center awarded two Kelley Altman Greer Family Autism Research Fund Pilot Awards to four UNC-Chapel Hill researchers, including cell biology researcher Matthew Judson, PhD, and biomedical engineering researcher Phillip Durham, PhD, at the UNC School of Medicine. The goal of this funding is to stimulate multidisciplinary collaborations in autism research among UNC faculty and incentivize researchers to generate pilot data for use in grants to the NIH and other external agencies.

Michelle Floris-Moore, MD, MS, will deliver the lecture in honor of Adaora A. Adimora, MD, MPH on June 20.

UNC Addiction Medicine Program and CORE NC presented on "Low Threshold MOUD: Partnering with Community to Expand Access" during the Morning Plenary at the 2024 Addiction Medicine Conference and shared new video on the Atlas Mobile Clinic community-campus partnership in Robeson County.

New research led by Qingyun Liu, PhD, assistant professor in the UNC Department of Genetics, has uncovered a genetic feature known as "transcriptional plasticity," which plays a pivotal role in governing the transcriptional response of Mycobacteria to stressful conditions.

One of the main priorities of the Mental Health Equity and Inclusion Program is to enlarge the number of qualified students interested in pursuing careers in psychiatry. As an intentional effort to accomplish this goal, the program engaged with medical students at a national conference interested in learning more about residency training at UNC, future career options in psychiatry, the Triangle as a place to live, and how they may become more engaged in the pursuit of mental health equity.

The Kenan Scholarship provides support to students from rural backgrounds in North Carolina. Two recent Kenan Scholars share a passion for rural healthcare and are returning to their home communities to serve in high need positions.

An interdisciplinary team of UNC-Chapel Hill researchers from computational medicine, genetics, biostatistics, and surgery investigated how cell cycle flexibility allows tumor cells to escape the effect of anti-cancer drugs that target cell division. UNC Lineberger members Jeremy Purvis, PhD, professor of genetics, and Phillip Spanheimer, MD, assistant professor of surgery, led this study.

Assistant Professor of Family Medicine Jesus Ruiz, MD, published an article in Annals of Family Medicine addressing the community impact of UNC Chatham Hospital’s Maternity Care Center, titled “Closing the Gap: How a Community Effort Can Improve Rural Maternity Care.”
