Stephanie Duggins Davis, MD, began her new role as Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Physician in Chief at NC Children’s Hospital in late July. It’s a return home for the North Carolina native who previously spent 12 years as a member of the pediatrics faculty.

Gary Beck Dallaghan, PhD, has joined the UNC School of Medicine’s Office of Medical Education as the Director of Educational Scholarship. Beck Dallaghan comes to Chapel Hill from the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he served as Assistant Dean for Medical Education.

Site preparations will begin in late September 2018 for the construction of UNC Hospitals’ Surgical Tower, a seven-story building to be built in front of NC Memorial Hospital. The Surgical Tower will offer enhanced space and features for our surgeons and staff, including modernized operating rooms, improved space for recovering patients, and more space for families and guests. When completed in 2022, the Surgical Tower will be the largest building on UNC Hospitals Chapel Hill campus at more than 330,000 square feet. Learn more about what to expect.

In the journal Cancer Immunology Research, scientists led by UNC Lineberger’s Yuliya Pylayeva-Gupta, PhD, revealed that a molecule called interleukin-35 plays a role in suppressing cancer-fighting immune cells in pancreatic cancer.

On June 25, 2018, Governor Roy Cooper vetoed House Bill 1055. This means payment options will not be eliminated and service purchases will not be restricted. It is unclear whether this bill will be revisited when the North Carolina General Assembly goes back into session in 2019.
