Medical student Joshua Romero competed in an Ironman triathlon in Houston, Texas, on April 22 and raised more than $3,000 to support the UNC School of Medicine's Student Health Action Coalition, a free student-run clinic available to the Chapel Hill community.

Department of Emergency Medicine faculty members Martin Casey, MD, MPH, and Michelle Meyer, PhD, MPH, were awarded one of ten scholar and mentor program grants from the National Foundation of Emergency Medicine. The 2-year program supports outstanding teams of mentors and scholars in emergency medicine.

The Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) medical honor society at UNC-Chapel Hill has announced its spring 2023 inductees. AOA was founded in 1902 and is dedicated to a belief in improving care for all by recognizing high educational achievement, honoring gifted teaching, encouraging the development of leaders in academia and the community, supporting the ideals of humanism, and promoting service to others.

The Council of Faculty and Academic Societies (CFAS) represents medical school faculty and academic societies within the governance of the AAMC. The UNC School of Medicine CFAS representative has the opportunity to be heard at the national level on a variety of issues critical to academic medicine, and can bring colleagues’ perspectives back to the AAMC through CFAS.

Leah Ranney, PhD, MA, associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine, and Adam Goldstein, MD, MPH, professor and director of Departmental Advancement at the UNC Department of Family Medicine, led a first-in-kind study showing how tobacco warnings can improve considerably to follow proposed WHO FCTC guidelines.

Applications are now open until April 5 for the 2023 - 2024 Clinical Trialist Training Program, which provides 10% salary support for UNC School of Medicine faculty to obtain training on how to be a site investigator for sponsor-initiated multicenter clinical trials.

Medical students Amanda Nemecek, Bailey Moran, Bassam Shawamreh, Forrest Wilke, Kayla Tennant, and Maggie Crouse have been accepted into the Fully Integrated Readiness for Service Training (FIRST) Program. The students were selected based on their commitment to the specialties of family medicine, pediatrics and psychiatry.
