UNC’s Sasha Deutsch-Link, MD, a fellow in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, is lead author of a study indicating that alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) mortality increased from 2017-2020 and accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic in nearly all age groups. Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center have uncovered a new checkpoint that cells use to control what molecules they internalize. Understanding the determinants for entry into cells could lead to the design of better therapeutics that must enter through this gatekeeping mechanism.
