Beyond Eat, Sleep, Console: What's Next for NAS?

Join NC TraCS and the UNC Center for AIDS Research for the Spring 2021 edition of the Implementation Science Speaker Series, featuring Carolyn Audet, PhD, Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Epidemiology and Assistant Director of Community Based Implementation Research at Vanderbilt University. In this seminar, Audet will discuss engagement of traditional healers in the delivery of evidence-based HIV testing and treatment support in rural South Africa.

This six-part orientation is strongly recommended for all clinical research personnel who are new to research or new to UNC-Chapel Hill.

The UNC Department of Pathology will host Dr. Jerad Gardner of Geisinger Medical Laboratories as the keynote speaker for the 8th annual Thomas Bouldin Visiting Professor Lectureship. Dr. Tom Bouldin served as the AP/CP Residency Program Director at UNC from 1991 to 2012, and the lectureship was established by alumni and faculty in 2013 to honor him and his dedicated service to resident education. Dr. Bouldin continues in his role as one of our department neuropathologists.

One of the UNC School of Medicine’s oldest and most prestigious endowed lectureships, the Merrimon Lectureship sponsors an annual event of public lectures and consultations involving a distinguished senior speaker addressing issues in the ethics and history of the health professions.

In this competition, selected students from across the medical school will share personal, profound and humorous lessons learned during their tenure in medical school. Dr. Chantel Martin’s research seeks to uncover social and biological mechanisms of health disparities across the life course. Tatiana Petrova, Ph.D., from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, will give a virtual talk, titled: “Mechanisms of Lymphatic Vascular Specialization”.

This presentation will discuss current knowledge on the association between sensorineural hearing loss & falls as well as a proposed mechanistic model. Preliminary results on whether the association is modified by hearing healthcare intervention (i.e., hearing aids and/or cochlear implants) will also be discussed.

In this seminar, Cathi Propper, PhD, will focus on early predictors of cognitive outcomes in preschool age children. Specifically, prenatal experience such as stress, inflammation, and nutrition play a critical role in shaping childhood developmental trajectories and they differ by sociodemographic status. Prenatal experience may also influence infant sleep across the first year of life, which may act as a mediator of the relationship between prenatal experience and cognitive outcomes.

How Does It Develop? as part of our Spring 2021 series on Culture & Developmental Science: Considering Context, Culture, and Intersectional Approaches! This interactive beginner course will teach users to build forms using the online designer or data dictionary.

Advanced training in using functions with your projects such as Surveys, Randomization, Calendar/Scheduling, etc.

*NOTE: There are no prerequisites for taking the Functions class. Previous attendees advise that you should take one of the Forms classes prior. As a minimum, it will help if you are familiar with building forms, field types, and the options/parameters that belong to those field types.

In this session of the NC TraCS Machine Learning Seminar series, Buck Bohac, PhD, will walk attendees through the process of using CLARK! and regular expressions for clinical research. CLARK! is a machine-learning classifier developed through a collaboration between NC TraCS and CoVar Applied Technologies, a Durham, NC-based machine learning company. CLARK! is designed to take clinical notes as input, and classify those notes based on features defined by the user as regular expressions.

In this session of the NC TraCS Machine Learning seminar series Michael Kosorok, PhD, will present on recent developments in Machine Learning and how these developments will impact and advance Precision Medicine. Precision medicine is "an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person." This approach will allow doctors and researchers to predict more accurately which treatment and prevention strategies for a particular disease will work in which groups of people.
