The UNC SOM John B. Graham Student Research Society is currently calling for abstracts for oral and poster presentations for our annual Student Research Day to be held on Friday, November 12, 2021. Abstracts are due on October 1st, and we will communicate decisions on oral and poster presentations by October 8th. The 2021 UNC Medical Center Quality and Safety Award winners have been selected after a rigorous review process. Over 20 nominations were received by the committee, and 6 finalists were sent to the MCIC Executive Committee for a formalized selection of 3 teams. The committee appreciates everyone who submitted nominations. UNC Medical Center leadership is truly proud of these outstanding efforts to improve patient care and safety.

TEAM ADVANCE invites faculty to register for Peer Mentoring Circles. The program promotes professional development and community building for early-career faculty. Brea Hampton, a PhD candidate in the Genetics & Molecular Biology (GMB) curriculum and member of the Department of Genetics, has been awarded a competitive five-year Transition to Aging Research Award for Predoctoral Students from the National Institute of Aging (NIA).

Steven Young, MD, PhD, has been awarded a center grant (P01 mechanism) to establish an Endometriosis Research Center to provide new information and new approaches to this common, yet devastating disease.

The UNC Lineberger Developmental Funding Program supports the development of cancer research led by faculty to stimulate new applications for extramural funding. All UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center members, UNC-Chapel Hill faculty, and UNC system school faculty are encouraged to apply. Available targeted RFAs for the Fall 2021 cycle: (1) Cancer Survivorship Research, (2) Cancer Screening, (3) Population Sciences Approach to Addressing Cancer Disparities in North Carolina

With a majority of kids back at daycare and in classrooms, Zach Willis, MD, MPH, and Bill Wilson, PharmD, expect to see a comeback in pediatric community-acquired pneumonia. A new clinical pathway is hoped to aid provider decision-making for these young patients.
