A Message from our Chief Physician

Dr. Wesley Burks is Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and Physician in Chief of N.C. Children's Hospital.

January 2012

Dear Friends:

Happy New Year from North Carolina Children’s Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics at the UNC School of Medicine! 2012 is a year of important milestones for us, marking 10 years in the “new” children’s hospital and the 60th anniversary of the UNC Department of Pediatrics.

This also marks the beginning of my tenure as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and Physician-in-Chief of N.C. Children’s Hospital. I came to UNC in December from Duke University Medical Center, where I was Chief of the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology and Program Director of the allergy and immunology training program.

In my new roles here at UNC, I hope together we can continue to build an integrated, patient-centered healthcare environment that results in better health outcomes for children. To that end, we will begin our strategic planning with an initial focus on:

  1. Promoting leading edge clinical care across the department and N.C. Children’s Hospital for all children;
  2. Expanding outreach for the underserved throughout the state, region and internationally; and
  3. Developing the highest quality translational and clinical research in pediatrics with a focus on disease-oriented, multidisciplinary research.

As we enter 2012, I feel we cannot truly celebrate our present and plan for our future without also honoring our past, which makes the subject of this year’s N.C. Children’s Hospital calendar so poignant—Celebrating a Decade of Difference.

The patients featured range in age from 10 to 20 years old. They hail from different places and have very different medical diagnoses, but they all have one thing in common—they were patients at UNC before there was a North Carolina Children’s Hospital. As a result, they and their families have witnessed an entire evolution in care and can testify to the tremendous impact the “new” N.C. Children’s Hospital has had in the lives of hundreds of thousands of children since its doors first opened 10 years ago. Please join me in visiting our website each month to learn more.

Warmest regards,

Wesley Burks, MD
